The transparent layer in front of the colored part of the eye is called the cornea. Cornea transplantation is the procedure of replacing the patient’s cornea with a clear corneal tissue taken from a deceased donor.

In our country, the most common indications for cornea transplantation are keratoconus (a deformity where the cornea protrudes forward), pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (persistent corneal edema after cataract surgery), and corneal injuries.

Corneal transplantation is also used to treat corneal dystrophies, which are hereditary diseases causing loss of corneal transparency. In advanced cases of herpetic keratitis (ocular herpes), cornea transplantation may also be necessary.
